The 50 best Bob Dylan songs of all time
By Charlie Burton, Bill Prince 15 June 2020
As Bob Dylan releases his 39th studio album ‘Rough And Rowdy Ways’, GQ presents a ranking of his essential songs
Whole books have been written about individual tracks; by the same token, in a three-stanza song he will encapsulate the narrative arc of an entire novel. But what is it that makes Bob Dylan’s work so uniquely vulnerable to interrogation? Kenneth Clark defined Shakespeare’s genius as “his freedom of mind, his power of self-identification… his complete lack of any dogma”. Dylan’s songs continue to bedazzle, bemuse and blow us away for the same reason.
So, in the spirit of such mixed-up confusion, “Blowin’ In The Wind”, “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, “Maggie’s Farm” are just a few of the timeless, untoppable tunes you won’t find on this non-exhaustive list. Instead, you’ll find a highly partisan pick of songs that stand out in many cases for not standing in the company of his many stone-cold classics ? and thus deserve a place in this unsparingly subjective half-century.
